Answer the Call! Donated Cell Phone Benefit Your Neighbors in Need Monroe County United Ministries is now collecting cell phones and their batteries for recycling. MCUM will be paid for each phone donated and those funds will be used to support MCUM's Childcare and Emergency Services Programs. Frequently Asked Questions about this Program 1. What types of cell phones will you accept? All phones are accepted and will generate some funding for MCUM, regardless of brand or age. Phones do not have to be functioning. 2. Where can I donate my phone? Currently, phones can be dropping off at MCUM, Opportunity House, TIS Bookstore, several area churches and anywhere other items are collected for MCUM. You can find a map of MCUM and Opportunity House's neighborhood on our Contact or Visit Us page. 3. What will happen to my phone after I donate it? MCUM ships collected phones to a company that refurbishes phones for future use or recycles phones that are beyond repair or too old to refurbish. MCUM is paid for each phone collected; the amount varies according to the age, condition and type of each phone. 4. Does MCUM want the charger and other accessories that came with my phone? We can receive payment for phones and batteries, but not any phone accessories. Please do not include any accessories with your donation. 5. Do I need to clear out my contact list and other saved information from my phone before donating it? The memories of each phone are cleared during the refurbishing process but MCUM recommends that you clear information from your phone before donating it, especially if you use a collection box in a public area. 6. Why should I donate my phone to you when other programs collect phones for use by clients? When you donate your phone to MCUM, you are helping residents of Monroe County receive emergency assistance in the form of food, clothing, homelessness prevention and much more. You are also helping to provide high-quality, affordable childcare for working families. However, MCUM does not want to take phones out of the hands of clients who need phones for their safety. We are happy to work with legitimate organizations to provide functioning phones to community members in need. 7. How can I help with this program? We need volunteers to collect phones and package them for shipping. We also need offices and stores to host collection boxes. Volunteers are also needed to help us spread the word about this program and to organize cell phone collection drives within workplaces, clubs and congregations.
